Budhi Gandaki Floods Devastate Gorkha as Rescue Teams Reach Cut-Off Villages
GORKHA, Nepal, 13 October 2026: Rescue and relief operations are continuing in Nepal’s Gorkha district after flash floods along the Budhi Gandaki River damaged homes, bridges and infrastructure, leaving several settlements difficult to access.
The flooding followed a landslide near Chumchure that blocked the river and caused water levels to rise. The resulting surge damaged riverside communities and disrupted transport links in the mountainous region.
Rescue Operations Continue in Affected Areas
Nepalese security personnel and emergency responders have been working to reach affected communities, evacuate residents and tourists, and deliver essential supplies. Reports indicate that more than 200 people were evacuated during the relief operations, while hundreds of people have been rescued in the wider response.
Authorities have also been coordinating the delivery of food, tents and medical supplies to communities affected by damaged roads and bridges.
Five People Reported Missing
At least five people were reported missing following the flooding, according to reports published by international news agencies. Search and rescue efforts have continued as officials assess the situation and identify the needs of affected communities.
The full extent of the damage and the final number of people affected remain subject to official assessment.
Homes, Bridges and Infrastructure Damaged
The floodwaters damaged houses, farms, bridges and hydropower project infrastructure along the Budhi Gandaki River. The destruction of transport links has made access to some settlements more difficult, complicating relief delivery.
The incident highlights the vulnerability of Nepal’s mountainous communities to landslides, sudden river blockages and flash floods, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
Residents Urged to Follow Safety Instructions
Residents in flood-prone areas should follow instructions issued by local authorities and emergency responders. People living near rivers should move to higher ground if water levels rise suddenly and avoid crossing flooded roads, streams or damaged bridges.
Authorities and relief organisations continue to assess the impact of the disaster and provide assistance to affected communities.
